    Jump to Recipe

a timeless, nostalgic recipe for a perfect homemade Apple Crisp –  just doesn’t get any simpler or delicious than this!

You may be wondering how I came across this very charming cookbook, Alpha Bakery, put together by Gold Medal Flour in 1997…

the iconic children’s cookbook from almost 30 years ago!

Ellie and I about to create history in our “Bake like a 90’s Mom” series!

The long and the short of it is, my Mom has a knack for hanging on to special things! I remember this cookbook from my childhood, and she had the foresight to set it aside.

Maybe she knew all along that, one day, we’d look back on unfussy, nostalgic recipes like these. They would instantly take us back to a simpler time, one that we’re all craving: the 90s.

The recipes are organized alphabetically, the ingredients are widely available and minimal, and the pages are whimsically illustrated as if it were to be read while seated in a semi-circle around the school librarian during story time.

Have we grown and progressed as individuals and as a society? Maybe. But maybe they were all on to something in 1997, by compiling an adorable cookbook together designed specifically to get kids excited about the art of cooking and baking. No slime, no needohs, just actual dough.

I made the most minor changes to the original recipe (I added salt, an extra apple, and a touch more flour to the topping).

Tools I use To make Apple Crisp

    • Here’s the link to my tried and true Cast Iron Skillet!
    • The ONLY peeler I use – This Swiss peeler by Kuhn Rikon

So without further yammering, I highly suggest you get your kids in the kitchen with you, and make this delicious apple crisp, and don’t even for one second consider leaving out the WALNUTS. They are essential to the crunch.

    Some lessons arrive loudly.
Others rise quietly, like dough left alone on the counter. For a long time, I thought progress meant movement—constant checking, adjusting, fixing. If something wasn’t growing fast enough, I assumed I had done something wrong. Bread changed that. Not all growth is visible at first.
Not all progress looks impressive in the moment.
Some of the most important transformations happen in stillness, in warmth, in time no one sees. These days, when something feels slow, I try to remember the bowl of dough on my counter—doing its quiet work without my interference. Some things don’t need force.
They need patience.
And trust. ✨ If this resonated, you might enjoy following along—there’s always another lesson rising here.
